Interior and exterior paints are formulated for different environments. Choose a product labeled for the surface and use you have in mind rather than treating leftover paint as interchangeable.
Exterior Paint: Weather Exposure
Exterior coatings are designed for outdoor conditions such as sunlight, rain and temperature changes. Their resins, pigments and additives are selected for those demands. The surface and existing coating still need to be compatible with the product.
Interior Paint: Everyday Living
Interior wall and trim coatings are selected for appearance, cleaning needs and the conditions inside the home. Product quality and sheen influence washability, how repairs show and how the finish responds to everyday wear.
High-traffic halls, kitchens and bathrooms deserve particular attention. A finish that suits a quiet bedroom may not meet the same cleaning needs as a frequently used passageway.
Can Interior Paint Be Used Outside?
Use an exterior-rated coating for outdoor work unless the product specifically allows both uses. An interior-only coating is not designed to provide the same weather resistance.
Can Exterior Paint Be Used Indoors?
Do not use an exterior-only paint inside the home. Follow the product label and select a suitable interior coating for bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms as well. A need for moisture or mildew resistance does not make an exterior-only paint an appropriate indoor substitute.
Match the Product and Sheen to the Room
Discuss the material, existing finish, lighting and cleaning requirements. Low-VOC options can also be discussed; ventilation and curing instructions still apply.
