Exterior paint does not have one fixed lifespan. In San Antonio, sunlight, moisture, surface condition, preparation and the coating system all influence how long a finish remains in good condition.
Use Lifespan Ranges as Planning Guides
For early planning, approximate ranges are 7–10 years for stucco, 5–7 years for wood siding, 10–15 years for fiber cement and 12–20 years for painted brick. These are broad planning estimates, not warranties or a replacement for inspecting your own home. A poorly prepared or heavily exposed surface may need attention much sooner.
Sun Exposure and Landscaping
South- and west-facing walls often receive strong afternoon sun. Open lots and homes without mature landscaping can expose walls, fences and decks to more direct weather. The exposure of your particular property matters more than the neighborhood name alone.
Surface Preparation

Loose paint, damaged caulk, cracks and unsound material need attention before the finish coat. Cleaning, appropriate repairs and compatible primer help create a sound base. Paint will not solve an active moisture problem.
Paint Quality and Compatibility
Choose a coating suited to the material and existing finish. Lava Painting uses Sherwin-Williams Duration, SuperPaint and Emerald where appropriate for the project. Product selection, application and maintenance work together.
Signs the Finish Needs Attention

- Peeling, cracking or blistering.
- Persistent chalking or pronounced fading.
- Bare wood or damaged stucco.
- Failed caulk and water entry around joints.
Help the Finish Last
Inspect your exterior annually, clean it using suitable methods and address small defects promptly. Keep sprinklers and vegetation from repeatedly soaking or rubbing painted surfaces.
Ask for an Exterior Assessment
If the coating is showing wear, Lava Painting can discuss localized maintenance or repainting. An on-site assessment is a better basis for planning than the age of the last paint job alone.
