If your kitchen feels dated but the cabinets are still sound, painting can update their appearance without replacing the entire kitchen. The right choice depends on the cabinet condition, the layout and the changes you want to make.
Compare the Scope and Cost
Lava Painting’s current guide lists kitchen cabinet painting at $3,750–$8,000. Your estimate depends on the size of the kitchen, the number of doors and drawers, the existing finish and preparation required. See our pricing page for the current guide.
Replacement is a different project: new cabinet boxes, installation, countertops and related work can substantially change the total. Compare written scopes rather than treating painting and replacement as interchangeable quotes.
Compare the Disruption
Painting retains the existing layout, while replacement may involve demolition and other trades. Both require planning around kitchen use. Preparation, coating and curing time depend on the project; confirm the schedule before making arrangements.
When Replacement May Be Appropriate
- Cabinet boxes are structurally damaged or affected by extensive water damage.
- You need a different layout or substantially different storage.
- Repairs would not leave a sound base for a new finish.
When Painting Makes Sense
Painting is worth considering when the cabinets are sound, the layout works and you want a change of color or finish. Suitability also depends on the material and existing coating, which should be assessed before work is quoted.
Preparation and Application
A cabinet project can include removing and labeling doors and hardware, cleaning and degreasing, sanding or deglossing, repairs, a compatible primer and a durable cabinet coating. The preparation and application method should be specified in your estimate.
Choosing a Cabinet Color
White, off-white, light gray and navy can all work well in the right setting. Look at samples alongside countertops, flooring and lighting before deciding. Lava Painting can help you plan a cabinet refresh around the features you are keeping.
